"Researchers and students from the School of Engineering of the University of Minho (EEUM) have won a dozen national and international scientific distinctions since June. The feat reaffirms the quality, dynamics and innovation of this academy, especially in the area of artificial intelligence (AI) .

The Algoritmi research center had three teams with the best scientific article at international conferences. An intelligent platform to promote school success, by Dalila Durães, Bruno Veloso, Renata Magalhães, Francisco Marcondes, Henrique Lima and Paulo Novais, was highlighted at Sustainable Smart Cities and Territories (SSCt), in Colombia. At the 23rd Computational Science and Applications (ICCSA), Lino Costa, Francisco dos Santos and Leonilde Varela were honored for their multiobjective approaches in decision-making in industry. The ''''architecture'''' of intelligent health systems proposed by António Chaves, Larissa Montenegro, Hugo Peixoto, António Abelha, Luís M. Gomes and José Machado was highlighted at the end of the seven IA & Data Science International Conferences, in Guimarães.

The students also obtained three awards. Rita Dias, Master''''s student in Engineering and Quality Management, had the best article among students at the Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IOEM) European conference in Lisbon. It presented a roadmap for the industry to adapt to the new levels of quality. Vítor Magalhães is doing his PhD at the Center for Microelectromechanical Systems and stood out at the 7th IEEE Portuguese Meeting on Bioengineering, with a microplastic separator based on microalgae and a portable phytoplankton monitor. Still in Porto, the ACA Innovation Student Challenge was dominated by students Sandra Costa, Maria Pereira, Maria Inês Torres and Francisca Falcão, from Engineering and Industrial Management. They launched a sustainable brick made from end-of-life clothing and will have a business internship to work on the project.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister António Costa and Minister Elvira Fortunato awarded the Medal of Scientific Merit to Manuel Mota, a pioneer of biotechnology in Portugal, at the 23rd Science Meeting in Aveiro. The professor emeritus founded and directed the CEB. Rosa Vasconcelos, from the Department of Textile Engineering and current UMinho Student Ombudsman, was honored by the Order of Engineers - Northern Region, on the Regional Engineer''''s Day, in Braga, for her contributions in the area."
